The effects of your actions will never be known to you. As a child, one of my friends had told me about a song his father used to play at home. It was a kishore song, 'aa chal ke tujhe' and I finally saw and heard it later on TV. Even today it is one of my favourite songs. We perform so many actions, say so many things without ever knowing how it is affecting/impacting someone. Once while driving in a car with a friend, i stopped at a signal. At 10 at night. in Mumbai. He said the road is empty and there is no one. You can cut the signal and no one will know, and no one will be inconvinienced. My point was that we do not know who is seeing us. even if a small kid is watching us from the balcony learns the lesson and emulates it, then the action would have been worth it.

Reading regional literature

The Sahitya Akademi awards books in regional languages every year. At my last count there were award winners across 18 languages. A quick fact check and background on the Akademi and awards can be googled. The intent of this article is not to spread awareness about the award. But to understand contemporary India, English writing won’t suffice,it’s important to read regional literature to gain an insight into that state , mindset and issues. Why can’t the Akademi translate each year,s winners into English? It would open the market up for regional writers It would open up minds of youngsters across states to the diversit...

A man called Ove

There are some books that hook you from the opening paragraph. They dispense with the niceties of building up and slowly sucking you in. Instead you  plunge straight down a steep slope like the best roller coaster rides. A Man Called Ove has been one such ride for me. The story ( without giving too much away) is about an man, who now no longer has a day job and potters around the neighborhood. As the book progresses we find out more about him, his life and love and the people around him. An grouchy old man becoming everyone's favorite is an old trope in books. However, this is so beautifully written ( and beautifully translated into English from Swedish), that like the best books /movies it feels fresh. Each chapter uncovers a new layer to the person , and what seems like disjointed writing in an earlier chapter suddenly makes sense later. The book like Ove himself falls into place , just the way it should. It made me laugh out loud, cry, quietened the cynic in me and had ...
